Third and fourth graders started with a study of texture and the various techniques that can be used to create an illusion of texture. We looked at examples of different castles and talked about what makes a good variety in texture to avoid a flat piece of artwork. The students spent a day testing different techniques and deciding which ones they liked best for their own castle. They then made their own Texture Castle; they started by making an outline of their castle using different design ideas. They could choose to add a castle creature to live in their drawing as well. Then they added at least three different textures into their castle and made sure to fill the entire space.
