Kindergarten and first graders started exploring what the term space means in art. They watched a video and had a discussion about positive and negative space in art. Students started by creating a design where they had to fill the entire space of their paper with color. The following week classes discussed what the word symmetry means. Then they cut out symmetrical shapes from their colored designs by folding it in half and drawing a simple line on the folded edge. They then used both pieces of their colored paper to glue to construction paper. The final creation shows a beautiful display of symmetry with the positive space as color and the negative space as the plain construction paper.
