gesture line self portraits
Fourth graders learned how to draw in a different way, using gesture lines. We discussed how line is used in many different ways in art, and that every drawing starts with a dot that turns into a line. Gesture line has specific requirements such as no erasing, drawing quickly, looking at the “object” in front of you and drawings and starting with the bigger areas. They started with a few gesture drawing sketches in their sketchbooks of a few different things such as their shoe, the persons face that’s next to them, their hand, etc. They then had to sketch a gesture self-portrait in their sketchbook. They then moved onto final draft paper, drew their portrait (using a mirror) and the gesture drawings requirements. Once they finished their drawing they traced with sharpie and added color using water colored pencil. The last step was to add shapes in the background with whatever design they choose.
