georgia o' O'KEEFFE inspired shells
Second graders learned about the artist Georgia O' O'Keeffe and her love for being in and observing nature, collecting nature and painting large to really get people to look closely at nature. We read several books about the artist, and focused mainly on her shell paintings. I brought in shells I have collected from many different places and let they choose shells to do some observational drawings of them in pencil. They also looked at the shells through a magnifier glass to really look close at the detail and colors. They then had to choose their favorite observational drawing and enlarge it to fit the whole paper so it almost becomes abstract. They then added color with oil pastel and [practiced blending color. They last step was to choose one color marker and carefully color in the background going in all one direction.
