clay textured fish
First Graders learned about texture in a whole new way. They explored texture by using clay. We first explored implied texture by looking at images of fish, and talked about how you can draw texture using line and shape. They then had to draw four fish sketches, and add texture to get ready for their clay design. They then each got a rolled out piece of clay, sponges, water, a wooden pointed stick and a bucket with lots of texture tools. We worked on the clay fish together step by step, first drew the fish on the clay with the wooden stick, then cut it out pressing the wooden stick into the clay. They then added fins with the score and slip technique. The last part was to add texture and an eye using lots of different tools such as Popsicle sticks, marker caps, texture plates, etc. They last step was to paint their fish using watercolor.
